Championship Golf in the Heart of the Lowcountry
In addition to its southern charm and low-key lifestyle, the Lowcountry is truly a golfer’s paradise! Within just seven miles along Fording Island Road, you’ll find six incredible championship courses at three distinguished private communities. We visited Colleton River, Belfair, and Berkeley Hall to learn more about what makes these world-class courses so special.
With two 18-hole championship courses by world-renowned designers, Jack Nicklaus and Pete Dye, the golf experience at Colleton River is first-rate. Both courses have been ranked by GOLF Magazine’s “Top 100 Greatest Courses in the U.S.” and offer challenging rounds through stunning Carolina coastal scenery. You’ll be surrounded by lush grasslands, local wildlife and magnificent, centuries-old live oak trees while enjoying the serenity of Colleton River’s majestic natural beauty
Even Academy Award-winner Robert Redford recognized the community’s stunning landscape and filmed many of the memorable golf scenes in his movie, The Legend of Bagger Vance at Colleton River.
The Jack Nicklaus course measures over 7,100 yards from the championship tees and rewards players of all abilities, each hole with opportunities for shot-making. An entirely different design than the Nicklaus Course, the Dye Course is a breathtaking links-style course that boasts views of Port Royal Sound and the Atlantic Ocean from many of its holes.
Colleton River hosted the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in 2015 and regularly hosts other notable tournaments like the South Carolina Amateur, the US Amateur Qualifier and the US Open Qualifier.
Designed by Tom Fazio, you’ll certainly be impressed by the two championship courses at Belfair that represent the best in Lowcountry golf. The 18-hole par-71 East Course is known for its distinctively Scottish links design and boasts beautiful marsh and water vistas.
Complementing the East Course is the parklands-designed West Course. The 18-hole par-72 West Course offers another fabulous golfing experience with its majestic oaks, abundant native grasses, and shimmering lagoons. Imposing bunkers flank nearly every hole’s rolling fairways and make for a challenging, yet playable round for players of all handicaps. LINKS Magazine called it, “what could be the finest set of golf holes in the Lowcountry, if not on the East Coast.”
Ask any Berkeley Hall member and they will tell you about the “Core Golf” experience that is unique to this community’s Tom Fazio designed North and South Courses. “Core golf” is described by some as golf in its purest form and that a round feels like, “a walk in a park rather than a ride through a subdivision.” With no interior roads or homes, the two championship courses at Berkeley Hall wind through a traditional Lowcountry landscape consisting of coastal wetlands, mature forests, and dramatic elevation changes.
Berkeley Hall has also developed a fabulous reputation for its outstanding learning center. You’ll have the chance to improve your swing through private instruction, group swing clinics, and state-of-the-art teaching equipment. PGA Tour Professional, Billy Andrade, spoke highly of his own experience at the center. “If you’re working on your game, this is the Mecca. It’s a phenomenal facility. The size, the attention to detail – it’s the best I’ve ever seen.”
Berkeley Hall is also home to the annual Players Amateur Tournament presented by The Heritage Classic Foundation, one of the top amateur events in the country.
