The charming coastal community of Bluffton is quite possibly the quintessential small southern town in South Carolina. Okay, make that small-ish. Bluffton has grown exponentially since the last census was taken, seeing approximately a +76% uptick in population from 2010-2018, according to U.S. Census reports. With that kind of growth, the question begs to be asked: Why in the world are so many people moving to Bluffton? We’re glad you asked!

Strategically situated in the heart of the Lowcountry between Hilton Head Island and I-95, the township aptly named Bluffton was originally founded as a riverfront retreat upon the high banks overlooking the beautiful May River. Today, visitors and locals alike continue to be charmed by the history-laden architecture located on streets lined with ancient oaks draped in Spanish moss. It’s no wonder that this scenic locale has been on “best-of” lists including Southern Living’s 2019 The South’s Best Small Towns, Coastal Living’s 2018 Happiest Seaside Towns, and Forbes’ 2018 Best Places to Retire!

The combination of city mentality and village sensibility is one of the major features that makes Bluffton so appealing. It offers everything one might want with city living—restaurants, shopping, activities—along with a tranquility that invites you to slow down and stay awhile. An average temperature of 76 degrees is an enticing bonus and encourages all kinds of outdoor pursuits…boating, golfing, biking, and hiking just to name a few. With the beautiful sandy beaches of Hilton Head Island less than 30 minutes away, outdoor enthusiasts also have an abundance of water-centric activities to enjoy!

Another unique aspect of life in Bluffton is the Historic Old Town area, a picturesque town-within-a-town with a sweet southern vibe. Loaded with art galleries, an outstanding coffee spot, an impressive Farmer’s Market (offered every Thursday), and the iconic Church of the Cross—as well as a wide variety of eateries and boutique shopping opportunities—this stretch of real estate that runs down and around Calhoun Street is the perfect place to stroll no matter the season. And, as if this wasn’t enough, every year Old Town Bluffton offers a plethora of fun, family-friendly events, including the upcoming Historic Bluffton Arts and Shrimp Festival in October. There’s truly something for everyone in Bluffton!
